Sports Mouth Guards

Dental injuries are among the most common facial injuries sustained through participating in contact sports. Custom-designed and fabricated sports mouth guards play an important role in the prevention of sports-related dental injuries.

What are sports mouth guards?
Sports mouth guards are dental devices designed to protect your teeth and gums during contact sports. Sports mouth guards custom-made in our practice are designed to effectively protect the teeth from injury while minimising interference with speaking, talking, and breathing.

Why are sports mouth guards important?
Sports mouth guards are perhaps the best and easiest way to protect your mouth from sports-related injury. While generic mouth guards can be purchased in sports stores, they are often bulky and lack retention, limiting the level of protection they offer to your teeth. Sport stores also sell 'boil and bite' mouth guards. While these offer slightly more personalised protection, they can be tricky to fit perfectly and fail to fully protect posterior teeth.

Our custom made sports mouth guards offer the best, most individualised protection for your teeth. They are professionally designed to offer the exact level of protection that you need. Since they are created for your individual mouth, they also offer a superior fit over store-bought mouth guards.

We offer a range of colours and patterns in which your mouthguard can be made. This will be discussed during your visit.

Snore Appliance

While nearly one quarter of Australian adults suffer from chronic snoring, most never seek medical treatment for their condition. What many people fail to realise is that not only does habitual snoring deeply impact the quality of your sleep, but it can also be an indicator of a more serious condition, like sleep apnoea.

What causes snoring?
Snoring is caused by the obstruction of the air flow through the nose and the mouth, resulting in vibrations that cause the snoring sound. Reasons for this obstruction can include:
  • Blockages in the nasal airways that requires extra effort for air passage.
  • Poor muscle tone in the nose and throat that causes the airway to become partially blocked due to soft tissue collapse when lying down.
  • Bulky throat tissue caused by being overweight or having large tonsils or adenoids. Soft palate or uvula blocking the airway in the back of the throat.

What treatment options are available for snoring?
We can create customise dental appliances to help reduce or eliminate your snoring.
These are worn every night.
These appliances work by moving and holding the lower jaw forward, which lifts the tissue at the back of your throat away from the upper airway. This reduces the air resistance that leads to sleep apnea and snoring.

Important: We recommend seeing a sleep specialist who will diagnose sleep apnoea and recommend the personalised treatment that you require for the condition

Occlusal Splint: Grinding & Bruxism

Some people grind their teeth and clench their jaw muscles during their sleep. This is called bruxism and is an involuntary habit. As bruxism causes the upper and lower teeth to wear against each other it leads to gradual damage including shortening, cracking and chipping of the teeth. Your teeth may also become sensitive.
Overuse and tension of your chewing muscles can cause them to be tight and sore. You may have head and facial pain caused by the clenching and grinding.

What is an occlusal splint?
An occlusal splint is a slim hard acrylic guard which fits over the biting surfaces of your upper teeth. It is designed to be worn at night. An occlusal splint will not stop you from grinding or clenching. It does however, guide the jaw into a neutral position which relieves some of the pressure on the jaw joint and very effectively protects your teeth against the destructive forces of bruxism.

Our occlusal splints are custom made specifically for you. Two short appointments are required.

Please note: It is advisable to have any fillings, or any required dental treatment done, before any dental devices are made as they may no longer fit well if any treatment is required after the dental appliance is made.
